EARTHWORK & SITE BALANCE

Understand the ground behind the bid.

Develop an earthwork estimate from existing and proposed contours, then review the assumptions that turn a volume into a sitework plan.

01

Begin with both surfaces.

A cut and fill comparison needs meaningful existing and proposed elevation information. Check contour labels, vertical units, the site boundary and survey coverage. Missing elevations or mismatched datums can make a convincing-looking estimate unreliable.

02

Review the cut and fill.

Use the earthwork tools to compare the design and existing ground and review the resulting cut, fill and site balance. Confirm the calculation boundary and spot-check against cross sections or an independent measurement when the estimate warrants it.

03

Apply the project assumptions.

Shrink, swell, stripping depth and subgrade adjustments change the material picture. Keep those assumptions visible, and use values appropriate to the project and its specification. Review haul and balance separately from the unadjusted surface comparison.

04

Develop materials and field comparisons.

Apply depth, density, unit pricing and truck capacity assumptions to material quantities. Supported as-built and design comparisons can help you review where the ground is high or low. Engineering review and site-specific inputs remain part of the workflow.

CUT & FILL, MAPPED

See where the ground moves.

Every modelled grid cell is coloured by the volume it carries, red for cut and blue for fill. Read it in plan or lift it onto the surface.
